Can I choose a new middle name after marriage?

This will depend on your marriage license. Some marriage licenses ask for your new/married name when applying. If that’s the case for you, you may be able to write your desired middle name on the marriage certificate and use that as your legal name change document.

Other marriage licenses do not ask for a new married name. If your license does not ask for a new name, then creating an entirely new middle name would require you to obtain a separate court order. In that case, you'd be limited to these middle name options:

  1. Keep your current middle name
  2. Replace your current middle name with your maiden last name (note, if you don't have a middle name you can move your maiden last name to create a new middle name)
  3. Create a double middle name using your current middle name and your maiden last name
